Update: Textile Art Teaching Program for the Quilters Guild of the British Isles was a huge success!

Region 2 and 3 (Kent, West Sussex and Hampshire)

Debbie conducted a class October 22, 2007 for the Whittering group. The day was spent teaching and sharing while the sun shined outside. After a lovely lunch, the ladies headed straight back to their work and enthusiastically developed their pattern design before the end of the day.

On October 24th Debbie traveled to Guildford and gave a lecture which included a slide and quilt show. The lecture went smoothly and people commented how much they liked the quilts and were thrilled to meet Debbie.

The next day, Debbie conducted a class for the Guildford group. Spirits were high and lots of progress was made in the class.

By the end of the day everyone was exhausted!

Images will be posted soon.

Textile Art with Pizzazz 2 or 3 day class

Level-intermediate, confident with sewing skills

Create drama! Value contrast and luminosity are the keys to adding drama. A pattern is provided as a starting point, however, each student will end up with a diffferent ending. Learn which fabrics to combine for bold contrast and glowing luminosity. Develop the pattern design with a technique called "camouflage". This technique works like magic layering fabrics for texture and blending. The camouflage technique is one I use primarily and I am always intrigued with the results and I know you will be too.

Flower Market

This class is available for groups and as a studio class. Groups, maximum: 10 people; studio class maximum: 6 people.

Location: St. Leonard Creek in Southern Maryland (Calvert County) Regional venues accepted

I describe my quilt designs as: Intensely colorful with graceful fluid shapes and lines that contrast within a dynamic design. People often ask me how I make my quilts or lament they wish they could. I have developed this class for people who admire art quilts and wish they could attempt one but do not have the background or confidence. I know you will be pleased to learn the techniques I use that will allow for greater freedom in both design and construction, which can also be utilized in many other ways.

Realize how curves enable virtually any subject matter to be rendered and will add an entirely new dimension to your quilts.

You are invited into my studio to learn methods I use, explore possibilities that will enable you to open your mind and realize how satisfying an original design can be. Build your confidence and step “outside the box”.

Day 1
Beginning with mini lecture and quilt show. Brief history of selected art topics. Creative exploring session. Includes some very simple 4x5” sketches of contoured shapes, potential designs will be considered and one selected. Discussion of color, value and texture will help you to decide the direction to follow as you realize the potential that lies in front of you. The techniques I will demonstrate will enable you to easily construct a 16” x 20” art quilt.

Recommend a few days in between for sewing.

Day 2
A critque session starts the second day using your completed quilt top. Second session is devoted to enhance it with paint. This step is optional but is fun and interesting to observe. The class concludes with embellisment considerations and private time for each student.

Day 3

A second critique session is conducted. Students are encouraged to contribute comments on what they see. Group critiques allow everyone to learn from each other. Comments are kept possitive and of a constructive nature. The remainder of the day is spent embellishing and many options will be covered. The afternoon is devoted to preparing the top for quilting; a demonstration of free motion quilting will be given.

Sewing machine and supplies: scissors, fabric, needle and thread. No mats, rotary cutters or rulers are necessary. A few acrylic paints will be used; foam paint brushes and assorted painting supplies.

Studio Schedule: Three 6 hr days with a few days or one week in between each day.
